Founded in Japan in 2022 by Ryunosuke Hata, Bibliotherk is a label shaped by a personal history that extends far beyond Tokyo.
The name itself is derived from the German word for library, Bibliothek, paired with the initial “R” from the designer's name. It pays homage to Hata's years living in Germany, where libraries became places of discovery and opened a path into fashion, clothing and the wider cultural landscape that continues to inform his practice today.
Drawing from German military uniforms, workwear and vintage menswear, Bibliotherk reinterprets familiar references through a quieter and more considered lens. Utility remains at the foundation of Hata's designs, yet its inherent rigidity is softened through relaxed proportions and construction that enables ease. Structured silhouettes are loosened, while carefully treated fabrics introduce depth, texture and unique tonal variations to the hand of garments.
Materiality sits at the centre of Bibliotherk's practice. Carefully sourced British and Japanese deadstock fabrics are paired with traditional treatments, including sun-dried persimmon tannin, known in Japan as Kakishibu. These processes naturally limit production, while lending each garment a distinct character and craftsmanship. Rather than pursuing perfection, the garments embrace texture, wear and subtle irregularities - designed to evolve and reveal new qualities over time.
For its first arrival at MOSS, we present seven pieces from Bibliotherk. Produced in extremely limited quantities, this selection offers an introduction to Ryunosuke Hata's world: one shaped by utility, materiality and the quiet relationship between clothing and everyday life.
